a couple of weeks ago i added myself to the waiting list (well, it was there) for the new version of Yahoo! Mail, and two days ago i got it. well, the realm of web applications never looked so close. it acts very much like a desktop app, with even the typical windows beige color (i wonder how does it look on other systems?) and all. on the left pane you have a list of folders and RSS feeds, and contacts link that opens in the main pane. the calendar and notpad are there too, but they open a new window with the old version of these utilities. the RSS feeds are what you have in My Yahoo, if you use it. i didn't check if they are synched, because i don't use My Yahoo anymore.
of course, there is rich text editing (but no text direction yet, for those of you not writing from left to right, like hebrew or arabic), you can open messages in new tabs or in new windows (this might cause trouble to IE users, because it's popup blocker sux), and it has context menues on a mouse right-click. i had my mozilla set to prevent sites from disabling my context menu, so the mozilla context menu covered the mail context menu, until i let it hide the mozilla menu.
multiple encodings are supported, including hebrew (windows-1255, and some old IBM encodings, but not visual hebrew), and you can switch encodings from a drop-down menu, which is very usefull if you communicate in more than one language, like me.
you can also search the mail, like before, and the options link will take you to the old options page.
oh, the ad is a "tower banner" at the right of the screen.
i think it's about time we start have links to web apps like this one from our desktop, instead of opening a web browser for it.

רשת ב' מדווחת הבוקר שהעבודה תקבל את תיק הביטחון ותיק החינוך. אמנם עדיף את עמיר פרץ בביטחון מאשר את מופז, שלא מצליח לראות מעבר לכוונת הרובה, אבל למפלגת העבודה עדיף את האוצר. נו טוב, לפחות יש לנו את החינוך. הגיע הזמן שיהיה שר חינוך ראוי במדינה הזאת, ויולי תמיר תהיה מועמדת מצוינת.
a few days ago i asked google to add Israel to their Google Analytics time zones. today i received this reply:

how difficult is it to add an item in a drop down list, and add a time zone line in a database table?
Google Analitics added an option to set the timezone for each profile, so you can see the stats relative to your time. problem is, you can't set it to israel's time zone. israel is simply not in the list. so i wrote them this message:
when i logged in to my account today, i was excited to see i can set my time zone. i clicked the link in the message, and searched for my country, Israel, in the list. Alas, i could not find it. is it possible you don't know about Israel? we are responsible to half the international news, you must have heard about us. hey, you even have an office here, and its CEO got the title of the Most Influential Person in the Israeli Internet recently, even though he hasn't done anything yet.
Israel is a small country in the middle east, with a time zone of GMT+2. please add it to the list.

לא אמירה של מה בכך, כאשר רק 63% טורחים להזיז את התחת העצל שלהם לכיוון הקלפיות. אני, מבחינתי, מתכוון לשאול כל מי שיתלונן בפני על המדינה המחורבנת שלנו, אם הוא הצביע. מי שלא הצביע, שלא יתלונן שיהדות התורה קיבלה 7 (7!) מנדטים, שש"ס קיבלה 13 מנדטים, ושהליכוד קיבל 11 מנדטים, וישראל ביתנו הפשיסטית קיבלה 12. יהדות התורה לא קיבלה פתאום מצביעים חדשים, אלה אותם חמישה מנדטים, שהלכו להצביע, בזמן שכל מני מפונקים הלכו לעשות מנגל והפקירו את הכנסת, והפקירו את ועדת הכספים לסחטנות של ליצמן. אותו דבר עם ש"ס ועם ישראל ביתנו. אמנם אינני תומך ליכוד, אבל כדי לקבל מערכת פוליטית יציבה, צריך מפלגות ליבה מתונות וגדולות בשני צדדי המפה, וכרגע יש את זה רק בשמאל.
במטה מפלגת העבודה אתמול היתה שמחה גדולה. אמנם טוב שלא שוברנו כמו הליכוד, והצלחנו לגייס את אותו מספר קולות שהפסדנו לקדימה, אבל לא ניצחנו. אין לנו את ראשות הממשלה, וזו המטרה. אני מקווה שבפעם הבאה נצליח יותר. אתמול התנדבתי לשבת במטה יום הבחירות באור יהודה כדי להתקשר לתומכים פוטנציאליים ולוודא שהם הולכים להצביע. היה לי רושם שרוב האנשים הלכו להצביע, ואולי זו אחת הסיבות שהצלחנו לשמור על כוחנו.
קדימה זו תופעה מעניינת. יש שם אנשים עם דעות מדיניות סותרות באופן מהותי, כמה אנשים שאף אחד לא מכיר את דעותיהם המדיניות (או אפילו את שמם, לצורך העניין), ואני לא רואה איך הם יצליחו להסכים בינם לבין עצמם על דרכם המדינית. אני מהמר שבבחירות הבאות, עוד שנתיים, הם ירדו ל-15 מנדטים.
חבל, ציפי היתה יכולה להיות ראש ממשלה. יש לה את הלסת המרובעת הדרושה לכך. באמת, מה היא כבר הספיקה לעשות? שרת חוץ לכמה חודשים, שרת משפטים לכמה חודשים, שרת חקלאות, שרת קליטה, וכמה חודשים שרת בינוי ושיכון. בקיצור, לא תפקידים משמעותיים במיוחד (ואלה שכן, רק לתקופה קצרה). לפני כמה שבועות השוו בידיעות אחרונות את קלסתרה של לבני לקלסתרה של השחקנית שמשחקת בתפקיד נשיאת ארה"ב באיזו סדרת טלביזיה שרצה עכשיו. לשתיהן יש לסת רחבה ומרובעת, מהסוג שנותן איזו סמכותיות מוזרה. כניראה שגם זה מספיק.
לאומנות, גזענות, מלחמה בפשע, כל המרכיבים הדרושים להכנת מפלגה פשיסטית אנטי דמוקרטית. ו-12 מנדטים הצביעו עבורה! ליברמן, בהיותו תחת חקירה משטרתית בעצמו, ומורשע בתקיפה, לא יכול לקבל את תיק בטחון הפנים, ואין סיכוי שישראל תשלול אזרחות מתושבי המשולש על בסיס אתני. ומישהו מכיר את עשרת הגמדים שמאחוריו? גם מי שהצביע עבורו לא מכיר אותם. הנחמה היא שדי בטוח שבבחירות הבאות הם יפלו כמו שינוי.
פורז התלונן בעיתון הבוקר על כך שהדיחו אותו משינוי ובגלל זה לא הם ולא חץ עברו את אחוז החסימה. סליחה, אבל למיטב זכרוני פורז הוא זה שפרש מהמירוץ כשראה שועידת המפלגה (או איך שהם קוראים לגוף הבוחר שלהם) מסרב להצביע כפי שהוא רוצה. אם הוא היה מקבל את הבחירה, ומקבל את המקום השלישי, שינוי היתה נכנסת, גם אם בפחות מנדטים.
הגימלאים? הגימלאים???? אין לכם למי להצביע כבר? זאת מפלגה שלא צריכה לקבל יותר משני מנדטים. בניגוד לטענתם, הם כן מיוצגים במפלגות אחרות, ואם כל הדפוקים שלא מבינים את תפקידם בדמוקרטיה היו מצביעים לעבודה במקומם, אז אפילו גדעון בן ישראל, נציג הגמלאים בעבודה, היה מצליח להיכנס לכנסת. עם זאת, גם הם נהנו מאחוז ההצבעה הנמוך.
אז איזה קואליציה תהיה? קשה לומר, אבל אני יודע איזה קואליציה צריכה להיות: קדימה – עבודה – מרצ. הבעיה היא שזה נותן רק 52 מנדטים. אם נצרף את הגמלאים, שדעותיהם המדיניות לא ברורות, עדיין נישאר עם 59. אולי נצטרך לבלוע את ש"ס, או יהדות התורה. ברור שכל מי שמימין לקדימה לא בא בחשבון: פרץ לא ישב עם ליברמן מסיבות מוסריות, ולא עם הליכוד מסיבות אידאולוגיות, וכל השאר לא יסכימו לנסיגה/התנתקות/התכנסות/השתבללות של קדימה. לי נראה שנצטרך לסמוך על ש"ס והגמלאים בנושאים הכלכליים, ועל חד"ש ובל"ד בנושאים המדיניים. מאוד שביר.
skype announced a deal with Intel recently, where 10-way conference calls will only work with the Intel dual-core processors, while users of the superiour AMD dual-processors will only be able to have up to 5-way calls.
obviously, it didn't took too long before someone hacked the skype program to overcome this limitation, and showed that AMD processors are just as capable as Intel's.
about two weeks ago Ilan Halimi, a young jewish man, was found badly injured in paris, and died of his injuries shortly afterwards. it was later discovered that he was kidnapped for ransom, because his kidnappers were sure "jews have money". the jewish community, and following them israeli and french officials, were quick to announce this was an act of antisemitism.
in my view, if anything, this was an act of stupidity (but what can you expect from criminals). they didn't kidnap him because they hate jews or because they have anything against jews. they did it because they had this notion, originated in classic antisemite accusations, that jews somehow attract money.
so i think we should be carefull not to quickly announce that every crime against jews is an act of antisemitism. sometimes, a crime is just a crime.
last weekend (saturday-sunday) i was in brussels, for the FOSDEM 2006 open source conference. i wrote about the conference itself here (hebrew), but here i'd like to write about my experience as a visitor to brussels. i landed before dawn, so i thought i'll take the opportunity to look around the city. the information station at the central bus station wasn't open before 8 am, so i couldn't get a map. so i arrived at the hotel, put my bag down, and headed to town, hoping to find a map there. gurnisht, all i found was schematic maps on signs and pointers to all sorts of buildings. and they were all in french and flemish, not in english! i mean, tourists mostly come from other countries, don't they? so i called the tourist information center by a number i found on one of the signs, and asked where to find a map. the guy there directed me at the wrong way (could be a misunderstanding though) so i wasted an hour walking the wrong way. eventually i wasted all my time, gave up, and went to the conference i came for, hoping to have better luck the next day.
on sunday, i made a bad calculation of time and went to the city hall, where the tourist information point was, hoping to have a chance to look at some of what this city has to offer. it was of course closed, with dozens of tourists hanging around the square in front of it.
three years ago i was in rome. now this is a city brussels can learn from. there are dozens of tourist information points scattered around the city, with maps and other info, so there is no chance for a tourist to get lost there.
