חזרתי ממילואים

בסוף השבוע שעבר חזרתי משבועיים של אימון מילואים בצאלים. עצם העובדה שהתאמנו במשך שבועיים, בתרגיל חטיבתי משולב עם חטיבה 7 המשוריינת (אני משרת בגדוד חי"ר), הוא שינוי מרענן יחסית לשנים האחרונות, שבחלק מהן לא התאמנו בכלל עקב קיצוצי תקציב. וככה גם הצבא יצא למלחמה.

עוד שינוי מרענן היה ציוד אישי חדש. מגיני ברכיים שממש מגינים על הברכיים, עם לוח פלסטיק קשיח. עד היום מגיני הברכיים היו עשויים מריפוד בלבד, וחולקו במשורה. אני יכול לתאר לעצמי איך ההרגשה לנחות על אבן חדה עם דבר כזה. גם משקפי אבק חדשים חולקו לנו, במקום השרידים ממלחמת יום כיפור שהיו עד היום, וגם אפודי קרב חדשים, במקום השאריות ממלחמת של"ג. המון רצועות יש באפודים האלה, וגם גומיות מיוחדות לאיחסון הקסדה כשהיא לא בשימוש, וכיס לאיחסון נאד מיים בנפח 3.5 ליטר במקום שתי מימיות 3/4 ליטר שהיו עד היום (אבל יש גם מקום למימיות למי שרוצה להוסיף. עם פתח כלפי מטה, להקלת הגישה). חבל שהיה צריך לעבור מלחמה כדי להבין שבלי ציוד אישי מתאים קשה להילחם.

חוץ מזה, היה די מתיש. כרגיל בצאלים, עדיין לא בנו מבנים קשיחים למתאמנים, וישנו בקור כלבים באוהלים. רק אחרי שעטפתי את עצמי בשתי שכבות בגדים, שמיכה בתוך השק"ש ומעיל מלמעלה, הגעתי לטמפרטורה שמאפשרת שינה, גם אם הרגשתי כמו חנוט. מה קשה לבנות אולמות שינה אני לא מבין. וזה היה בשבוע הראשון, של אימוני הפרט, שיעורי קשר ומטווחים. בשבוע השני התרגיל יצא לדרך, וכששמונה אנשים בנגמ"ש פיקוד מנסים למצוא מקום לישון, די קשה למצוא תנוחה נורמלית. אבל זה עוד היה נסבל איכשהו. בלילה השני הסתובבנו כמו דפוקים על בט"שית שהיתה על תקן נגמ"ש, במרדף אחרי טלפון סלולרי צבאי שאבד, ובבוקר נמצא באחד הג'יפים. בקושי ישנתי שעה. ביום השלישי כבר בקושי יכולתי לעמוד על הרגליים. לקח לי בערך יומיים להתאושש ולהשלים שעות שינה.

ועוד לא דיברתי על החול שאכלנו, שעף עם סופות החול לתוך האוכל המוכן בחמגשיות. ועל הנשק בלאי שנתקע מהחול ובקושי ירה שני כדורים רצופים (כניראה נשק לאימונים בלבד, לא לדאוג).

לא דייקתי

הפארסה שנקראת אסתרינה טרטמן הגיעה היום לסיומה, עם הויתור על תיק התיירות. היא לא דייקה. אז אמרתי תואר ראשון מבר אילן כשלמעשה רק למדתי לימודי תעודה. אז אמרתי תואר שני כשלמעשה רק למדתי לתואר שני, במוסד שאין לו הסמכה לתת תואר שני. מזה עושים עניין?

נדמה לי שבערוץ 2 אמרו אתמול שבכך עברה הכנסת הזאת את הכנסת הקודמת במספר הפרשות/חקירות/תלונות, ואנחנו רק בשנה הראשונה. מעניין מה היה קורה אם זה היה עובר, והיא היתה מתמנה. האם היינו רואים הפגנות משמעותיות נגד זה, חוץ מההפגנות האוטומטיות של החשודים המיידיים – המכון לדמוקרטיה, ושאר האירגונים שעותרים לבג"ץ נגד כל מינוי מסריח. אם לא היינו רואים, זה היה אומר שהעם איבד כל תקוה לשפר את המצב, ורק ממשיך בחיים שלו ומקווה שכל זה יעבור מעליו. יש לי הרגשה שזה מה שהיה קורה.

scifi channel's EUReKA webisodes

the scifi channel created short episodes for two of it's tv-shows, Battlestar Galactica and EUReKA (the latter was aired here in israel, the former reached its 3rd season, but only the 1st is aired here now), available on it's web site. for some reason, they are only available to US viewers. but have no fear, for they can both be found on file sharing networks, and the EUReKA webisodes can also be found on youtube:
unfortunatly, only 7 of the 8 webisodes can be found on either youtube or ED2K network. if anyone has the 8th one (titled "part 7", because the first was "prologue"), please let me know.

i don't understand why these webisodes are limited to US viewers in the first place. if they worry about their bandwidth, they can upload it to youtube themselves, like CBS did with their shows.

a keyboard with a smiley key

how come no one came up with a keyboard with a key yet? this is used so often these days, it's only reasonable there would be a key that will produce the ":-)" sequence in one key stroke.

StarTrek Voyager

in the last few months i've been watching star trek: voyager. i've never seen it before, simply because no tv channel in israel, local or foreign, aired it until now (well, except for the german SAT1, but they dubbed it to german). after watching the first season and a few episodes of the second one, i have to say, this is probably the worst star trek series ever. i just can't figure out how this lasted for seven seasons, while star trek: enterprise lasted only four, with much better story line. hell, the fact that it had a story line differs it from voyager. so far, a season and a half, nothing happened on the ship. nobody died, nobody joined, nobody fell in love, nobody had a fight. the initial conditions of every episode are not changing until the end, and no story lasts more than one episode, two at most. the only interesting things i saw so far were some revealings about the history of the star trek universe and the characters themselves, but there is just no character development what so ever. in fact, i skipped one episode because it took too long to, hmmm…. get it, and didn't miss a thing. i watched it later, and couldn't notice the difference.

oh well, i guess i'll watch it to the end anyway. i just can't call myself a trekky if i won't.

why i left wikipedia

in the last couple of years I've been writing articles for the Hebrew wikipedia. i wrote about the Apollo program and most of the astronauts that participated there, i covered the recent shuttle flights since the Columbia accident, and about the accident itself. before that, i wrote about several transportation vehicles, and other subjects of interest.

but recently, i found it more and more difficult to participate in it. more and more often i encountered sysops that decided to exercise their authority skills on me, tell me how to behave, what constitutes defamation (without being asked to), and tell me what i should think about the acts of others. in this state of affairs, i found it impossible to participate in this effort, where instead of writing articles, i find myself fighting with people imposing rules of behavior i bet they don't follow themselves outside the wiki.

warp drive update

some time ago i wrote about a real warp drive in the planning. at the time New Scientist only released the first paragraph or so from the article to non-subscribers. now, about a year later, the entire article is available for free, and it's even more amazing. if the theory proves right, this engine can take us to mars and back in 5 hours, and a star 11 light years away in 80 days. that is because, it is thought, the engine will create a field in which light is much faster, so you could reach much higher speeds without going faster than light.

the main problem with it is that it introduced new concepts in physics, that need Nobel prize class scientists to figure out. i wish Boeing or some other company of this size, or maybe the US government, will put in the money to investigate the theory and see if something real can be made out of it. if you know anyone in the aerospace industry, please forward this article to him, so they'll know about it.

Shatner talks about Star Trek XI and his new Star Trek books

in an interview with SciFi Wire, Wiliam Shatner revealed that the next star trek movie, the 11th in line, will be about captain kirk and mister spok while in starfleet academy and/or shortly after that. he is also writing two books who's story takes place in starfleet academy.

a new study published in the annual meeting of the ameriacan astronomical society suggests that the viking missions, that among other things tried to detect martian microbes, may have killed them. how typical of humans – whenever we come to a new teritory, the first thing we do is kill the natives!
