אתמול בבוקר שלפתי מהארון את אחת מהחולצות שקיבלנו מקרן מוזילה, חולצה שחורה חלקה למעט סמל השועל במרכז החזה (כשהאינטרנט שלי יעבוד כמו שצריך, אני אשים פה תמונה), והלכתי לעבודה. כשיצאתי מהבית, חלפתי על פני בן תשחורת לא מוכר, אבל להפתעתי, הוא הצביע עלי וקרא "זה האינטרנט!". "מה?!", תהיתי. אז הוא ענה, "זה הסמל של האינטרנט!".

הגענו לזמנים טובים. פעם אנשים לא הצליחו להבחין בין אקספלורר לאינטרנט. היום כבר יש כאלה שלא מבחינים בין פיירפוקס לאינטרנט.

הערה לא קשורה: אני יודע שהזנחתי קצת את הבלוג הזה, מכל מני סיבות. אני אשתדל לעדכן אותו יותר, בעתיד.

הרבה נאמר בזמן האחרון על הירידה במכירות של עיתונים מודפסים, ועל כך שיותר ויותר אנשים צורכים את החדשות שלהם באתרי חדשות (או מפסיקים לצרוך חדשות בכלל, שזה יותר מדאיג). הוצאות העיתונים כמובן אינן אדישות לכך, וכל עיתון גדול פותח היום גם אתר אינטרנט עם דיווחי חדשות ותוכן אחר, מגזיני יותר, כדי לתפוס באינטרנט את הקוראים שלא קונים את העיתון. בכך, אולי, העיתונים גם תורמים בעצמם לירידה בתפוצת העיתונים, כי הם בעצמם מספקים אלטרנטיבה.

אני רוצה להתמקד כאן במקרה של ידיעות אחרונות, שאותו קראתי במשך שנים רבות, כל עוד גרתי עם הורי (עד גיל 30 בערך), ושאת האתר שלו, ynet, אני קורא בקביעות כיום.

כאשר עברתי לדירה משלי, החלטתי שלא לעשות מנוי בעצמי על העיתון המודפס, משום שבשנים האחרונות ידיעות הפך לצהובון רדוד וצעקני, שלעיתים קרובות נותן לי הרגשה של עלבון לאינטליגנציה. חשבתי לעבור לעיתון אחר, כמו הארץ או ג'רוזלם פוסט, אבל עוד לא הגעתי לזה. בינתיים, אני קורא את החדשות שלי ב-ynet, כאמור. אך אינני יכול לומר שאתר אינטרנט, ובפרט ynet, יכול להיות תחליף טוב לעיתון. מכמה בחינות, חוויית השימוש בעיתון מודפס עדיפה על אתר כמו ynet.

ראשית, מהירות התגובה. בעיתון מודפס, כאשר אני רוצה לעבור לכתבה הבאה, אני צריך רק להסיט את מבטי. ב-ynet, אני צריך ללחוץ על קישור, לחכות שהמוני פרסומות הפלאש יפונו מן הזיכרון, ולחכות עד שהדף עם הכתבה הבאה ייטען. זה תהליך שיכול לקחת בין 5 ל־25 שניות, שזה המון זמן.

שנית, כמויות הפרסומות וההפרעה שלהן לקריאה. גם בעיתון יש פרסומות רבות, כמובן, אך הן סטטיות. הן לא חוסמות לך את שדה הראיה, לא קופצות לך בזווית העין, ולא מכבידות על הזזת הדף. ב-ynet, כניראה גם בגלל שהפלאג אין של פלאש לפיירפוקס קצת יותר כבד מאשר ל-IE, כמויות הפרסומות מאוד מכבידות על הדפדפן, ולוקח לי בדר"כ שתי שניות מרגע שאני גולל את גלגל העכבר, ועד שהדף ממש זז. אמנם המחשב שלי בן כמעט חמש שנים, אבל זה רק אתר אינטרנט! ועוד משהו, בעיתון הפרסומות לא עושות קולות כאשר מעבירים מעליהן את היד או משהו, כמו שקורה לפעמים כאשר מעבירים את העכבר מעל פרסומת באתר. לא, לא מעניין אותי מה יש לכם להגיד לי, רק רציתי להזיז את העכבר ועמדתם לי בדרך, תודה.

שלישית, אתר כמו ynet מתעדכן במשך כל היום. לכאורה, כך מקבלים את החדשות העדכניות ביותר. למעשה, אם נכנסים בערב, כבר קשה למצוא את החדשות של תחילת היום. עיתון מודפס נותן לך באותה במה את חדשות כל היממה האחרונה, מסודרות לפי החשיבות שלהן, ולא לפי הסדר הכרונולוגי בו הן דווחו.

עיתונים במהדורות דיגיטליות, על גבי מסכים עם דיו דיגיטלית, כבר החלו להופיע על הקינדל של אמזון, ובקרוב גם על הקורא של פלסטיק-לוג'יק, אני מניח. אני מקווה שמהדורות אלה יוכלו לשלב את הנוחות של קריאת העיתון מתי שנוח לנו לקרוא את העיתון, מחד, והנוחות של מהדורה מודפסת, מאידך.

ביום שישי האחרון נערך הכנס השנתי של קהילת הקוד הפתוח בישראל, "אוגוסט פינגווין", שהיה השנה במכון ווייצמן ברחובות. מוזילה בישראל הקימו שם דוכן מרשים מאוד, עם פוסטרים והמון מוצרי פרסום שחילקנו לכולם – סיכות, צמידי סיליקון, מדבקות מכל מני סוגים, וגם כובעי יום הולדת. רם און העלה תמונות לפיקאסה-ווב (מה קורה עם פליקר?) ותומר כתב עוד כאן.

למיקרוסופט יש כמה צעצועים ל-Windows XP, שמוסיפים לו כמה תכונות מעניינות שלא הגיעו איתו במקור. מתוכם, אני משתמש בשניים:

Virtual Desktop Manager מאפשר עבודה על כמה שולחנות עבודה במקביל. תכונה סטנדרטית בכל הפצת לינוקס, ולא מאוד שימושית, אני חייב לציין. אני חושב שזה יבלבל את רוב המשתמשים.

הצעצוע השני שהתקנתי הוא Task Switcher, שמשמש כתחליף לחלון המכוער שבדרך כלל רואים כשלוחצים Alt+Tab. עקרונית הרעיון טוב. במקום פס אפור עם אייקונים של התוכנות שניתן לעבור ביניהן, מקבלים ריבוע די גדול (בערך על שטח רבע מסך, בתצוגת 1024×768 שלי) עם רקע כחול, תואם לסקין של ה-windows, שבחציו הימני אייקונים של התוכנות ביניהן אפשר לעבור, בחציו השמאלי צילום מסך של התוכנה שהאייקון שלה מסומן כרגע (כל לחיצה נוספת על Tab כאשר Alt לחוץ עוברת לאייקון נוסף, בדומה לחלון המקורי של windows), ומעל כותרת החלון של התוכנה. כך שהעיצוב יותר אלגנטי, והרבה יותר ברור לאיזה תוכנה עוברים כאשר רואים את צילום המסך שלה.

אלא שהצעצוע הזה סובל ממספר באגים. למשל, לעתים צילום המסך משובש, ובמקום צילום של איך שהתוכנה נראית, רואים רק מסגרת של חלון ובתוכה רקע שחור. לפעמים צילום מסך של פיירפוקס הסתכם רק בממשק של התוכנה, כאשר במקום הדף שהוא מציג ראו בצילום רקע שחור בלבד. לעתים לא רואים אף חלון. עם זאת, ברוב המקרים זה עובד.

באג נוסף, הוא שהתוכנה הזאת עוברת בין כל החלונות הפתוחים, גם אם חלקם שייכים לאותה תוכנה. כך למשל, אם תוכנה מסויימת פותחת חלון פנימי (modal dialog), גם הוא נכנס לרשימת החלונות, כך שאותה תוכנה מחזיקה שני אייקונים נפרדים ברשימה, אף ששניהם מובילים לאותו חלון. תוצאה מצערת של הבאג הזה היא שאם בוחרים באייקון המייצג את החלון הראשי של התוכנה, מגיעים אל התוכנה כאשר החלון הפנימי לא בפוקוס, וצריך ללחוץ עליו עם העכבר כדי שאפשר יהיה להשתמש בו.

עוד באג, גורם לכך שלעיתים חלון המשימות פשוט לא נשאר פתוח לאחר שלוחצים על Alt+Tab, ומשאירים את Alt לחוץ. הוא נעלם מייד, ולעתים גם לא מחליף לתוכנה הבאה.

בסך הכל אפשר לחיות עם הבעיות, וזה עדיף בהרבה על המצב המקורי. חבל שמיקרוסופט לא מתחזקת את התוכנה הזאת, או לחלופין, משחררת את הקוד שלה, כדי שמישהו יוכל לתקן אותה.

נראה שתחליף פופולרי אחר למחליף המשימות של XP הוא TaskSwitchXP, אבל ממה שהבנתי מהאתר שלהם, הוא רץ קבוע בזיכרון, ואני לא אוהב להעמיס את הזיכרון בדברים לא מאוד חשובים, אז לא ניסיתי.

This blog was moved from a Yahoo! 360 blog I had at blog.360.yahoo.com/tsahi_75. Here are a few hints and caveats on how to go about doing it:

1. Go to http://download.360.yahoo.com and ask Yahoo! to send you a link to get the backup file.
2. Once you have the zip file, go to where ever you installed your copy of WordPress, go to the Administration panel and then to the Tools area. Of course, if you are hosted at WordPress.com, all of this should not apply. They have it all automated for you, as explained on that page.
3. On the Tools menu, select Import and then select MovableType and TypePad, and follow the instructions to import your posts.
4. As you can see in the zip file, images are in the images folder. upload this folder with the images in it to the site, to the root of the WordPress folder (where you installed WordPress). The images in the posts are already linked to this location.

Theoretically, you are done. However, things didn't go quite smoothly to me. I had to fix some issues:

• Tags are not imported. The only remedy I found was to go manually over all the posts and re-tag them. Quite labourious.
• Unless you are using the "ugly" (paremeterised) URLs for your blog, images will not show up anywhere but in the front page. This is because on other pages posts are under virtual folders in the URL, and the paths to them are relative to the post. The remedy is to go over all the posts and set an absolute URL to all the images. If you can't see the image in the post, go to the HTML view, you'll find the <img> tag there. Just change the "src" attribute to the full URL leading to the images folder.
  It is possible that this can be automated with some query on the database, but I didn't try. I only have about 10 images throuout my blog.
• About 1 in 20 posts, maybe even fewer than that, was cut in the middle and wasn't fully imported. I don't know exactly why this happened, but I found that they were usually cut off at places where there was a double space in the post. This could be a WordPress issue. So for these, you will have to copy the original post from Yahoo! 360 and paste it in the partially imported post.
• Sometimes, due to importing errors, the WordPress HTML is broken, and the theme doesn't show up right in an archive page. This is fixed after you edit all posts on that page and make sure their HTML is correct.
  Update: this seems to be related to the previous issue, i.e. on archive pages that contain posts that were cut off, the skin will be broken. Once you fix the post, the skin will look right.
• Update 2: It appears like in posts from around mid-2005 and earlier, lines are ended with a line break, even if you haven't pressed the Enter key when you typed them. As a result, lines in these posts sometimes end in the middle of the row and continue in the next row, because the row width of Yahoo! 360 and your WordPress theme differ. To correct this, you will have to delete the line break from the end of each line, and let the browser wrap the text at the end of the line. Again, it is possible that this can be done with a proper query on the data base.

The conclusion from all this is, that while you can import your Yahoo! 360 posts to WordPress, you will still have to edit each and every post you imported to restore it to its original form.

Well, that's a bit of an overstatement, but not by much. CNN is reporting that Facebook refuses to remove groups of holocaust deniers, saying that

"Just being offensive or objectionable doesn't get it taken off Facebook. We want it [the site] to be a place where people can discuss all kinds of ideas, including controversial ones."

Controversial?! so the holocaust existence is controversial?! I am amazed that these kind of groups are not removed automatically, in particular when the site was founded by a Jew, Mark Zuckerberg, which may have lost some of his own relatives in the holocaust (I'm just speculating here). There is fairness, and there is common sense. I think in this case common sense was left out.

Some of the bookmarks on my Firefox are almost as old as the internet itself. This is one of the few things, if not the only one, I managed to save while changing computers over the last 10-15 years. I collected some of them while I was still using Netscape 3.0 or maybe even earlier. So while I was going over some old bookmarks, I stumbled upon this piece of internet archeology. Somehow, this site is still online, although it seems like it hadn't been updated in the last 10 years. Complete with frames and <blink> (see the "Hacks 'n Cracks" section"), the Netscape 3.0 button at the bottom, mirror sites, and only the visitors counter is missing. It even has a page about this new thingy called ICQ

If you only logged on to the 'net circa 2000 or so, this site could give you a clue on how Web 1.0 looked like.

I just wanted to check something about Firefox' search bar, so I typed the random "asdf" and hit enter. Not surprisingly, Google found something about that too. The first result was asdf.com:
